WILLIAM BLAKE was thought mad in his lifetime. He barely made a living as an artist, and could not get his poems printed. Now he is recognized as one of the great English lyric poets, and his designs and illustrations speak to us imaginatively across a hundred and fifty years. This life of Blake shows him as the man he was, set squarely in the violent times he lived through.
Dr Bronowski shows that Blake was not an eccentric, but was a man of powerful mind, who knew and took sides in all the issues that were fought between the French Revolution and English reaction. Indeed, Blake's poetic eye looked deeply into another revolution: the Industrial Revolution, whose grave changes he foresaw better than the economists and politicians of the day. In the harsh history of his time, which Dr Bronowski re-tells, Blake the mystic poet and artist grows in stature.
This life of Blake was first published ten years ago, and it has had a profound influence on the appreciation of Blake since then. Dr Bronowski has revised it and brought it up to date for this edition, and added a new selection of Blake's designs and illustrations.
