Kunsthalle Bern | Afrika | Kunstausstellung | Ausstellungskatalog | Exhibition Catalogue

This book is about an exhibition that took place in Accra, Ghana, in 1999. With very few exceptions, all photographs were taken at the National Museum in Accra, built in 1957, and in its vicinity. The handwritten remarks were taken from the Visitors' Book, where every visitor could express him- or herself. The texts in the present publication were written by people who all saw South Meets West in Ghana, and who participated in the twoday workshop, during which African art was hotly debated. This exhibition catalogue is therefore a piece of reception, both spontaneous and reflected. A slightly modified version of the exhibition will be shown in Berne, Switzerland, from April through June, 2000. The opportunity arises for the second time to view and study the works presented at Kunsthalle and at the Historical Museum of Berne, to comment on them in the Visitors' Book, and to discuss them — but the context will be completely different. This reception will not be recorded, it will be a live event. For once, the traditional situation will be reversed: Europe — oral tradition, Africa —written records.
