The Dehumanization of Man Ashley Montagu and Floyd Matson

"It is a premise of our book that there is a direct continuity, in any period of history, between thought and action— between the tower and the street.... Behind the genocide of the Holocaust lay a dehumanized thought; beneath the menticide of deviates and dissidents, in the Gulags of Russia and the cuckoo's nest of America, lies a dehumanized image of man: in fact, it is the same thought and the same image."
—From the Authors' Preface

Ashley Montagu and Floyd Matson dissect and examine the narcissistic and self-destructive aspects of modern society-its science and sexuality, cults and culture, sports and entertainment. The authors diagnose the disease of the modern spirit as the "dehuman syndrome." We have been diminished by technology, violence and the culture of nihilism.
Among the problems discussed are the disappearance of privacy, the
subversion of political ideals, the destruction of sport and the amateur tradition, and the corruption of ideals.
There must be a way, the authors argue, to bridge the gap between
materialism and human fulfillment. Mind alone cannot provide the solution. What is needed is a minding-the marriage of thought and feeling. The Dehumanization of Man is a powerful call for humanity in the midst of modernity.

Ashley Montagu is the author of over sixty books, including The Human Connection and Growing Young (McGraw-Hill). Floyd Matson's books include The Broken Image, The Idea of Man and The Human Connection, which he wrote with Ashley Montagu.
