Foreword
We are pleased to present this revised and updated catalogue of the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Gifu. Since its opening on November 3, 1982, nine years have passed. During that time, the Museum has made expansion of its holdings one of its important missions, and the fulcrum of the endeavor to develop a truly unique collection. The total number of items in the collection at the opening of the Museum was 619 the number as of March 3, 1991, as listed in this catalogue, including documentary materials, comes to nearly 1,800. Confining the scope of its collection to the modern and contemporary periods (post1868), the Museum systematically collects works by Japanese artists important in the history of art, including those native of Gifu, in the genres of painting, sculpture, and crafts. By collecting paintings by Odilon Redon and those connected with him, it has built a distinctive collection that has earned it the nickname, "Redon Museum." In the past few years, especially, we have invested extra effort in gathering works of contemporary art, and are hopeful that it will develop into a well-integrated collection in the near future.
In April 1989, the Museum opened its "Hi-Vision" Gallery, providing clear pictures of the works on highdefinition video screens, and detailed information on the growing collection of art works, spearheading our overall efforts to promote art appreciation.
The growth of the Museum's art and documentary collection as well as the expansion of its facilities would not have been possible without the understanding, goodwill, and cooperation of many people. We would like to express our deep appreciation to those who have donated works to the Museum, to the friends and supporters of the Museum in many walks of life, and to the numerous art lovers who visit its exhibits. This catalogue, which we hope will promote the further understanding of the collection, is a token of our sincere gratitude to all for their support and encouragement.
