Forty years after the end of the Second World War, the time has come to view the art of this tumultuous century in an entirely new perspective. In this publication the whole panorama of German Art in our century is unfolded for the first time, tracing both its continuity and its discontinuity and revaluating it as a whole.
The development of modern German art from Expressionism through Neo-Expressionism is demonstrated by approximately 300 examples from the work of 52 different artists; masterpieces of painting and sculpture from all overthe world which have been reproduced in full color and supplemented by a further 300 comparative illustrations. This pictorial overview is given depth by essays on the cultural and arthistorical events of the epoch. Further broadened in scope by contributions on the importance of various movements and individuals, biographical articles and contemporary historical documentation, the volume contains a comprehensive index.
