ANTHROPOLOGICAL ARCHAEOLOGY
Guy Gibbon
ARCHAEOLOGY is undergoing exciting, dynamic change today: new approaches to the archaeological record are constantly being explored, and the more traditional methods, techniques, and concepts are being reassessed.
Guy Gibbon offers an enlightening reevaluation of his own in this book. He presents a current definition of the anthropological approach to archaeology, and introduces the reader to the problems and potential of reconstructing the culture and way of life of past social groups through their material remains. In examining anthropological archaeology as cultural history, the book considers such topics as the reconstruction of interpersonal relationships and symbolic thought in prehistoric communities, the ways in which individual communities coped with their environment, and the study of processes that promoted sociocultural change in the past. Gibbon then offers a unique look at anthropological archaeology as a fledgling social science.
This work does not advocate any one school of archaeological thought; instead it presents a balanced view of problems occurring in a number of approaches to archaeology and anthropology, showing how disagreements between scholars result in different research activities.
Gibbon's goal is to start the reader grappling with the methodological and substantive problems in the field of archaeology, and he encourages active participation in the ongoing debates.
While presenting many sides of an argument, Anthropological Archaeology asks the reader to think through the issues and develop his or her own conclusions. The book's subject, and Gibbon's presentation, make the volume important reading for professionals, and a challenging text for graduate and upperlevel undergraduate courses.

Guy Gibbon is Acting Director of the Center for Ancient Studies and Associate Professor of Anthropology at the University of Minnesota.
