THE SOCIETAL SUBJECT
Edited by Niels Engelsted Mariane Hedegaard Benny Karpatschof Aksel Mortensen
No person is an island, but essentially a part in the greater whole we call society. Yet, every person is an individual and a subject in her own nght. The duality of this statement - expressed in the title of this book - is one of the primary challenges to psychology.
This duality is also the point of departure for the theoretical work launched by the great Russian psychologists L.S. Vygotsky and A.N. Leontiev, and known as the Social Historical School and Activity Theory.
The contributions from fifteen Danish psychologists presented in the book relate, directly or indirectly, to this work. They introduce new theoretical reflections and ideas on the principles of mind on the societal subject.
The book has three parts: On foundations of mind, On mind society, and On growing up in society. Many aspects of psychology are treated from the domains of general psychology, cognitive psychology, personality theory, social psychology, organisational, developmental, and educational psychology.
Beneath this diversity the contributions share a common aim: the attempt to transcend the limitations of the traditional partitions of psychology, and the barrier between psychology and the social sciences.
