WILLIAM HAZLITT, 1778- 1830, was born at Maidstone, the son of a Unitarian minister, and spent most of his youth at Wem in Shropshire. His was a twofold nature, part artist and part thinker. Corning to London, he became friendly with Lamb and other literary men, and married a friend of Mary Lamb. His essays, whether on art or the drama, on literary subjects or on any topic which at the moment interested him, are of great interest and importance, and place him among the greatest English writers.
