CANADA in her present political form is barely 80 years old. She is, however, rapidly overcoming hindrances of distance, lack of communication, and language, and, the authors point out, is now selfconsciously striving toward a culture of her own.
Her earlier disunity has been further heightened by the influence of the United States, Great Britain, and France.
Her people have been handicapped in all these respects, but they have found that their diversity has presented a unique challenge to their sense of identity.
These objective essays, written by Canadians who are specialists in their various fields, comprise an impartial selfappraisal of our northern neighbors' living mind and spirit.
Canadian culture revolves around the search for selfidentification. Literature art, music, theater, social sciences, literary scholarship, education, science—all are active, some on a high level, and the contributors show faith and optimism in their future.
These essays, grounded in a sensitive appreciation and critical knowledge, add up to a lively and unique appraisal of the young culture of Canada. They can be read with real appreciation, not only by scholars, but also by that group of people who have an interest in the cultural pluralism that helps to make a more interesting world.

JULIAN PARK is professor of European history and international relations at the University of Buffalo. This is the second book compiled and edited by Professor Park describing ideas and institutions in foreign countries. (The first was The Culture of France, Cornell University Press, 1954.
