Fri-Art
Although certain important artists are participating here, it is essential to point out that the exhibition Fri-Art" isn't intended to be a reflection of contemporary Swiss art. And, if not all the great names are represented in this manifestation, it is precisely because Fri-Art wanted to give young artists the opportunity to express themselves outside of their country and, particularly, in New York, this privileged place of contemporary art.
Fri-Art wants to be an openstructure organization and it is for this reason that its organization differs from the usual organization of this kind of event. Fri-Art offers, not only the possibility to artists to participate in an experience, but also permits them to cooperate in the conception and realization of the entire exhibition. That is why at Franklin Furnace five artists were chosen and then given the opportunity to invite five others. The choice of these initial five artists wasn't made haphazardly; it was directed to artists who had already organized exhibitions themselves. This procedure also permitted us to obtain a more extensive range of artists.
The work of Meret Oppenheim, which is presented at the Clocktower becomes more legible thanks to the new painting and gains new insight. At the Clocktower, Fri-Art wants to provide an idea of the different aspects of pictorial writing used by our artists.
This overlook of art "made in Switzerland" couldn't be complete without video, dance, music, performances and film. That is why the manifestation owed it to itself to integrate the Kitchen—LA MAMA E.T.C. and the Collective for Living Cinema into the project.
To reduce and abolish the distance that generally separates artists from organizers, to smash customary ideas, to break down the barriers in which artists are confined, to prevent politics from playing a principal role, to suppress the personal interests which channel art into a direction which is not its own, are the goals that Fri-Art has established for itself, goals that Fri-Art hopes to reach one day.
