Nehmen wir an: ein junger Mann mit humanistischbürgerlichen Bildung will, nach einem blutigen Krieg, mit seinen Händen plastisch tätig sein, mit seinen Händen wirken. Wo soll er anfangen? Sagen wir: materialistisch, vom Stein aus, von den Felsbrocken in alpinen Gegenden, im Flussbett. Hier sind die Naturformen und Kerben geologisch, meteorologisch. Der junge Mann übernimmt Natur, verarbeitet Natur, ergänzt Natur. Bringt Blöcke in Zusammenhang, meisselt Kartographien heraus, besetzt Raum, skandiert Raum. Er wirkt auf drei Dimensionen, er wirkt symbolisch. Verklammert Form und Zeid, überbrückt Zeiten, Zeitalter, verknüpft plastische Traditionen, Zeichen, Vorbilder. Er weiss auch: »Was sind das für Zeiten wo / Ein Gespräch über Bäume fast ein Verbrechen ist / Weil es ein Schweigen über so viele Untaten einschliesst!«. Er zielt auf Kultur in einer Epoche der verrückten Zivilisation, seine Utopie ist der heile Mensch, der unverwirtschaftete, der sich Signale stellt, aus Stein, am Rand des Mythos. Der junge Mann hat keine Eile, sein Werk wächst langsam, als »novantike« Besetzung, Ordnung von Raum. Er verbraucht und erfindet Stein und Holz zu symbolischen Zwecken. Er setzt verklammerte ( verklauselte) Zeichen. Die Arbeitsprozesse (die alten und die neuen) beherrscht er raffiniert, durch large Erfahrung. Aus den Materialien holt er die immanente Substanz: Formgebung als Kontinuität. Bildhauer. Bildmacher. Gebildemacher. Kurz: eine artistische Individuation, ein Individuum. Der Einzelne als Träger der Tradition. Ist die Tradition, als solche, historisch beendet, bleibt das Individuum, die einzelne plastische Vision und Verwirklichung. Der junge Mann ist nun ein reifer Gebildemacher. Nehmen wir an: er heisst Giancarlo Sangregorio. E. P.

Let us imagine a young man of middleclass, humanistic upbringing. After a terrible war he wishes to create sculpture with his own hands. But where is he to begin? Let us say that he begins with materials like stone, the stone from the Alpine slopes, or from the beds of rivers. Here natural forms exist, in all their geological faults and weatherworn features and shapes of breakage. This man takes up nature as a subject, he reworks nature, and completes nature. He assembles the blocks. He chisels geographic maps on them. He occupies space with them. He makes space precise in statement. He works is three dimensions. He works symbolically. He joins and interconnects form and time. He spans time, from the most ancient epochs, linking traditional sculptural forms, codices, and modules. He is also aware, in all this, that there is a query at the present time: "What an era can this be, when any talk of a tree is a crime as it means silence about so much evil?" He aims for a deep culture in a season of civilization that has gone mad. His Utopia is that of Mankind healed, of Mankind unwasted in bureaucratic alienations. He is a man who sets out stone markers on the borderlines of myth itself. This young man is in no hurry. His work developes slowly, as a "novantica" filling and ordering space. He seeks out, finds and uses stone and wood for symbolic purposes. Work methods ( old as well as new ones) are mastered by him most subtly, through long experience. From the material he brings forth the immanent substance: a giving of form as a continuity. Sculptor. Image maker. Form giver. In short, an artistic personalization, a person. The single person as bearer of tradition. If tradition has been concluded, the personal vision and the individual sculptural realization remains. The young man is now a mature shaper of forms. Let us imagine that he is named Giancarlo Sangregorio.
