INTRODUCTION My collection has developed around a dialogue with artists, curators, writers, gallerists and designers. The collection has grown through close relationships with artists like Jeff Koons, whose work has been featured in numerous Deste Foundation exhibitions, and more recently Maurizio Cattelan and Urs Fischer. From its inception, the collection has focused on artists who engage contemporary life and culture through their work.
Fractured Figure developed out of a dialogue during the past several years with Maurizio Cattelan, Massimiliano Gioni, Ali Subotnick and Jeffrey Deitch about current developments in art and culture. In a discussion about an installation of some of my recent acquisitions, Jeffrey remarked that many of these works were figurative and reflected a new, more fractured approach to figuration. A plan for an informal installation became Fractured Figure, an ambitious curatorial and book project that explores a turn toward a new kind of figuration that reflects a more fractured world.
An active involvement by artists in the installation of the collection and in the design of the Deste Foundation's publications has been a tradition going back to our first projects. Cultural Geometry, the first major exhibition drawn from the collection, was brilliantly installed by Haim Steinbach, and the accompanying catalogue was a collaboration With Dan Friedman. For Fractured figure, we asked Urs Fischer, whose work is central to the exhibition, to design the catalogue. The project expanded into an extraordinary two-volume book edited and designed by Urs With the collaboration of Cassandra MacLeod and Scipio Schneider. The first volume is really an artwork in book form, a cinematic visual essay about Fischer's interpretation of the Fractured Figure concept. The book project was then extended into this second volume, focusing on a straightforward presentation of the works of art included in the Fractured Figure exhibition. The project also expanded into Urs Fischer taking on the design of the exhibition, resulting in a stunning installation that is documented in the opening section of this volume.
The installation of the exhibition has been an evolving project as several works have been Ioaned to museum exhibitions and others have returned. There have also been several significant new acquisitions, including Urs Fischer's "Death of a Moment, Birth of a Moment", a two-part hydraulic mirrorwall sculpture, which expanded the installation to an additional floor and gave the exhibition a dynamic conclusion.
