FRANCIS TURNER PALGRAVE ( I 824- 97) was professor of poetry at Oxford from 1885-1895. Himself a poet, he published several volumes of lyrics, but is best remembered for his anthology The Golden Treasury of Songs and Lyrics, the contents of which were approved by Tennyson, who was a close friend. This covers a period of some 220 years (Nash-Shelley) and it is necessary from time to time to extend Palgrave's selection with examples of the work of poets of the loth Century.
For this new and enlarged edition, the which has been specially prepared for this Series, the publishers were fortunate to obtain the services of Cecil Day Lewis, C.B.E., a distinguished poet in his own right and the present professor of poetry at Oxford. The catholicity of his choice of poems for the section which supplements the work of Palgrave is evidenced by such names as W. H. Auden, Hilaire Belloc, John Betjeman, Laurence Binyon, Edmund Blunden, Robert Bridges, Rupert Brooke, Roy Campbell, G. K. Chesterton, Mary Coleridge, Padraic Colum, W. H. Davies, T. S. Eliot, J. E. Flecker, Robert Frost, David Gascoyne, Robert Graves, Thomas Hardy, A. E. Housman, Lionel Johnson, Rudyard Kipling, D. H. Lawrence, Laurie Lee, Alun Lewis, Walter de la Mare, John Masefield, George Meredith, Edwin Muir, Harold Monro, Wilfred Owen, Ezra Pound, J. C. Ransom, Siegfried Sassoon, Edith Sitwell, Stephen Spender, A. C. Swinburne, Dylan Thomas, Edward Thomas, Francis Thompson, W. J. Turner, V. SackvilleWest, W. B. Yeats, etc.
This, one of the best loved books in the English language, deserves a place on every book shelf.
