Adlard Coles made his first long-distance cruise in 1923 in a 19 ft LWL sloop Annette, following it with several cruises in the Baltic to Denmark, Sweden, Finland and Russia. Some years of dinghy racing followed, and he resumed sailing after World War II in a variety of yachts ranging from the 4-tonner Zara to the i r-tonner Cohoe IV cruising or racing in the Channel, to Ireland, Spain and the French coast, and writing his well-known pilot books. At the same time he took up ocean racing and in 1947 he won the RORC Points Championship with Cohoe I. In 195o he took part in the Bermuda Race and won the Transatlantic Race. Cohoe II, a yawl, followed and she had many successes in heavy weather. In 1957 Cohoe III was built and with her he won Class III in the 1957 Fastnet Race and the RORC Points Championship. That year he was elected Yachtsman of the Year. Cohoe IV, a Nicholson 36, came in 1963, again winning the Fastnet Race and the RORC Points Championship in Class III. Adlard Coles returned to his older Cohoe III in 1965. She led the British team in the One Ton Cup Races in that year. In 1966 she won the heavy weather Dinard and Channel Races, and finished third in the Class II Points Championship, besides doing considerable cruising in the English Channel and the Bay of Biscay.
