The phylogenetic and ontogenetic development of eating behavior are carefully analyzed and related to the disturbances manifested in anorexia nervosa. Historical and transcultural aspects are also discussed in detail. In viewing anorexia nervosa as a selfinduced malady, the volume will be of particular interest to clinicians and therapists concerned with the complex interaction between behavior and physical illness.
