Arshinov | Anarchismus | Russland | Russia | Machno | Machnovscina

This is the first British edition of the only first hand history of one of the most significant episodes of the Russian revolution. In 1919 Arshinov became Makhno's secretary also organising the educational and cultural activities of the Movement as well as editing its paper "Road to Freedom". He remained with the Makhnovists until 1921. In 1922 he settled in Berlin and published the Russian edition of his history, of which the FREEDOM PRESS edition is an integral translation by Lorraine and Fredy Perlman.

Voline's (Vsevolod Eikhenbaum's) Preface to the 1923 edition and included in this edition is a document of importance in itself since he took part in the movement for six months until he was arrested and lost touch. In his Preface he writes "I will write about the Makhnovshchina at a later time, in my own way", and indeed he did in his monumental History of The Unknown Revolution, first published by FREEDOM PRESS in 19545 in 2 volumes. A new complete onevolume edition published in Canada is distributed in the U.K. by FREEDOM PRESS.

Until the Russian archives are available to historians Arshinov's history of the Makhnovists is undoubtedly the most important source work available.
Peter Arshinov (1887?1937) The author of this History was himself a militant socialist at the age of 17 and it was in prison in 1911 that he established a close personal and political friendship with Nestor Makhno which continued after their release following the February Revolution in 1917 first in the Ukraine and later in exile in Germany and France.

In this FREEDOM PRESS edition Nicolas Walter contributes a Preface which includes a biographical sketch of Peter Arshinov.
