BRITISH LIFE AND THOUGHT
British Philosophers
The author, A. D. Ritchie, Professor of Logic and Metaphysics at the University of Edinburgh, opens this concise presentation of his subject with a reference to the difficulties of selection and classification inherent in such a study, and deplores the lack of complete editions of the works of major British philosophers. Ranging back to the beginnings, he finds that 'ever since these islands entered on the Western heritage of culture, they have been prolific in thinkers who can stand comparison with those of any other parts of Europe'.
Mention of Hooker and Francis Bacon leads on to the seventeenth-century Platonists, to Hobbes and Locke, to the secularist cosmology of the eighteenth century, and to Berkeley who opposed it. Brief surveys of the philosophies of Hutcheson, Hume, Adam Smith, Price, Reid, Bentham and J. S. Mill are followed by considera-tion of evolutionary theory, and of nineteenth-century Idealism and the influence of Hegel on British thinkers, with particular reference to Bradley, Bosanquet, and McTaggart. Reactions against Idealism, and more modern extensions of philosophic enquiry, are typified by the work of Alexander, Whitehead, Russell, Moore and Broad. A final section deals with recent thought. British Philosophers is the first volume in the British Life and Thought Series to be issued with a new cover design by Mr. Reynolds Stone.
Orders should be placed with a bookseller, who should obtain supplies from LONGMANS, GREEN AND CO. LTD. 6/7 CLIFFORD STREET, London,
