Preface
The horse ceased to be an important source of agricultural power in the United States approximately 30—40 years ago, but popular interest in horses appears to be ever increasing. More people own horses, enjoy watching them, enjoy reading about them, and wish to learn more about them today than at any other time in American history.
Although horses have not received as much attention from scientists as have the other species of livestock, many significant findings about horses have been made in recent years. These findings, combined with the results of early equine studies, information extrapolated from experiments with other species, and observations of experienced horsemen, form the basis of most recommendations for modern horse management. This reference and textbook on the horse represents an attempt to combine these sources of information.
