The British System of Government

Here is a short and lucid outline of the principal institutions which together make up the Government of Britain, with an explanation of the spirit which per-vades their working. The part played by the Sovereign, Parliament, the Cabinet, the administrative organs, the Civil Service and the Local Authorities, is described with a view to essentials but without attempting to endow the constitutional machinery with a false simplicity.
The latter part of the booklet contains an account of the personal and political liberties which exist in Britain; an analysis of the attitude of the people towards public affairs ; and an inquiry into the extent to which Britain may be regarded as a genuine democracy. The purpose of the essay is, indeed, to inquire into 'the status, prospects and consequences of democracy in Great Britain at the present time'.
Dr. Robson, whose work is well known on both sides of the Atlantic, is an authority on public law and government. He is Professor of Public Administration at the London School of Economics and Political Science; Joint Editor of The Political Quarterly; and has had considerable personal experience of the practical work of government.
