THE 'ESTABLISHMENT'
The phrase 'The Establishment' (publicised by one of the contributors to this volume) has been gaining in currency and this is the first book to explain its meaning and examine critically the power of this vague body which has been most nearly defined as the alliance of those institutions and social attitudes which defend each other against attacks and enable the ruling class to maintain itself regardless of its present abilities; power, in fact, without responsibility. New generations can be recruited by the Establishment by giving advancement only to those who subscribe to its rules. England is the most socially conscious country in the world, and is naturally very susceptible to these subtle pressures. The contributors in this assessment are all specialists in their particular fields of study and we feel that this controversial and stimulating book is bound to upset many apple carts.
